PERFORMING IN AUSTRALIA AS A FOREIGN RESIDENT?

In preparation for entering Australia to perform your main points of contact to do this under appropriate authority are:
The Australian Tax Office  (ATO)  &  Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC)

All forms and document links are direct to the necessary sources.
Please make sure you down load the entire file/s as instructions are included and are very necessary in the application process.

01 - OBTAINING A TAX FILE NUMBER (TFN)  Instructions and information

Non resident Tax File application - Form (325Kb)  (there are full instructions on the form)

Note: please keep in mind that the reason for applying for a TFN is "to obtain an ABN"

It is also a good idea to have a lead time of 60 days as you cannot apply for an ABN until you have your Tax file number.
The lead time for a TFN is approx. 28 days and the ABN application should be allowed 28 days as well.

02 -OBTAINING AN AUSTRALIAN BUSINESS NUMBER (ABN)
Register for an ABN  Form (2.35Mb)  click " Apply for Australian Business Number"
You are applying as a Foreign resident and this will need to be addressed during the application process.
The Australian Tax Office will contact you if there is a problem with your application. This shouldn't be done until you've received your Tax File Number.

03 - APPLYING FOR A FOREIGN RESIDENT WITHOLDING VARIATION (FRWV)
This application form should be used by a foreign resident payee (a foreign resident entity who receives a payment) to reduce their 'pay as you go' (PAYG) withholding rate for the year ending 30 June.  This will also provide links to a full instruction booklet (on line) + Phone numbers and email address.
info here

  • note: this is helpful if it’s in place before your tour starts as you might be able to secure a 0 (zero) exemption through this application process.

04 - SEEKING UNION SUPPORT -  there are two bodies recognized by the DIAC are:

1. MUSICIANS UNION (MUA) – it is best to call and talk to Lynda Thompson, Imports Officer on 61 2 9440 4611 or via email on muaimports@bigpond.com
The office hours are Wednesday and Friday during normal office times.  There is no “on line” information on import requirements but they need to comply with DIAC guidelines.

2. MEDIA AND ENTERTAINMENT ARTS ALLIANCE (MEAA). – This is the only other body that is recognized by the D.I.A.C. that can support Sponsor and Visa Applications for Entertainers.
A great deal of helpful information can be found on the link:
Live Performances: Concerts, Disc Jockeys, Cabaret, Variety Performers and Technical Personnel

The Alliance Imports Officer is contactable on p.61 7 3846 0044 or imports@alliance.org.au
Check with them on membership requirements but it is understood that import applications will attract a Cultural membership fee of $50.00.
